Mom and Dad try hard to get at least a little scripture study in, but we should do a lot more on our own. This was something my counselor Heidi (left) really emphasized at Summer Scholars. We were talking about gaining our testimony, this is what she said, "Do you want to know how I gained a testimony? I worked dang hard." She told us about reading her scriptures every single for three years before serving her mission. There are a lot of different things to help yourself get a better scripture reading habit:
- Set a goal: Here is a really fun website for this: LDS Scripture Study Calculator
- Use a Journal: This may make the progress slower, but often more rewarding. You can learn a lot more this way and remember more. It also brings out a lot of personal insight and revelation. Its also good because often you can't fit all your thoughts in the margins.
- Cross Reference: Use those little numbers and letters, they will lead to all sorts of cool things.
- Highlight things: I dont use this a lot, but for some it can be really helpful.
President Monson said, "Let us study the scriptures and “meditate therein day and night,” as counseled by the Lord in the book of Joshua (1:8)" as his second guideline to fortify your foundation, only after prayer.
So, don't put it off, start tonight!
